Dr. Elena Herrera Carrillo holds a doctoral degree in Biochemistry from the University of Granada, Spain. She conducted her PhD research at the University of Barcelona, focusing on developing synthetic peptides from the E2 protein of GB virus C as new HIV-1 inhibitors. In 2018, Dr. Herrera Carrillo started her own research group focusing on novel CRISPR-Cas methods to attack the integrated HIV DNA genome to achieve a cure. She has taken a multidisciplinary approach, combining molecular biology, virology, immunology, and gene therapy to develop an original class of anti-HIV agents.

Dr. Maria Monge previously served as director of adolescent medicine at Dell Children’s Medical Center of Central Texas and as an adolescent physician at People’s Community Clinic in Austin and Lone Star Circle of Care.

Dr. Monge is director of the adolescent medicine rotation for the Pediatrics Residency at Dell Medical School and is a member of both the UT Austin Pediatrics Resident Clinical Competency Committee and the Program Evaluation Committee.

Dr. Joseph C. Gathe, Jr., a board-certified infectious disease specialist and fellow in the Infectious Diseases Society of America, has been in private practice serving Houston, the community where he was born and raised, since 1986. While he has expertise in a wide range of infectious-disease problems, he has a particular focus on those with HIV. Early in the pandemic he opened and co-directed one of the largest HIV care units in the world.

Dr. Ken Kunisaki completed his MD degree at The Ohio State University (Columbus, OH) and both his residency (combined Internal Medicine and Pediatrics) and fellowship (Adult Pulmonary and Critical Care) at the University of Minnesota. He also completed a Masters of Clinical Research degree at the University of Minnesota School of Public Health. Dr. Kunisaki is an internationally recognized scientist whose work in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) has advanced the field's understanding of exacerbations of COPD, particularly in regards to the clinical impact of these common events such as permanent lung function decline and increased cardiovascular events like heart attacks.
